The age-old debate concerns who can use the word and who can’t. Whoopi and Sherri try to explain that when African-Americans say it, the context is different, and it is partially because they reclaimed a word that others have used derogatorily. Elisabeth doesn’t quite see it that way.

I’m white and I accept the fact that its inappropriate for me to use that word. The word has an ugly history and whites shouldn’t use it. I love rap music and that word is used constantly, but that doesn’t give me the right to use it. I don’t get why some white people make such a big deal out of this. Why would a white person need to use the word anyway? It doesn’t even sound good coming from a white person anyway.

I guess if you belong to a certain ethnicity or race you are *allowed* to poke fun at yourself or use words that other ethnicities/races can’t call you. Perhaps you have that privilege.
Still, I think the n-word is a derogatory swear word (or worse) and should be avoided by all. I don’t quite understand why some black people seem to *want* to perpetuate the word even by using it flippantly.
Is it trying to exercise control? Kind of an in-group mentality? “We can use the word and you can’t!” A bunch of rappers calling each other that and exercising a little control over “the man.” Maybe it’s their right.

If someone does make something of themselves in that community their called and uncle tom for getting an education as opposed to “getting mines” by any means necessary. Now lets address that disease ridden vermin from south of the River Grand. Here is a race of pygmys who have absolutely no intention of adding to our society. They are only here to drain our resourses as evidenced by the 20 billion in electronic remittances sent below the River Grand last year. They, the TB and VD infected lot can live like kings in their dusty villages after siphoning out of our economy. What do you think they buy? Surely nothing made in the USA but food grown locally! First of all, every citizen of every race in the USA has been guaranteed the right of free speech however vulgar, hateful, demeaning or offensive it is. Everyone has been offended by the words of someone else in thier lifetime, but most ignore it and move on. If black society truly wants the word in question to be shelved completely then my advice to them is to “shelve it completely” from within thier own dialog. Since they are reluctant clean up their own vocabulary, I have the right to bring to their attention their own hypocracy in this discussion, and to quit trampling on the rights of others. Unfortunately, Mr. Sharpton, Mr. Jackson and other black leaders who proclaim themselves to be freedom fighters for the “equal rights” of all individuals seem to fall short of their goal in this matter, don’t they? The recent G8 Summit was held recently to discuss the problems of famine around the world. If you all remember the article within this blog about the G8 Summit, you’ll also remember the harsh comments and criticism some were making because of the elegant menu the members of the Summit had for their dinner. Several black bloggers participated. However, when I noticed there was’nt a black person (all were white in the photos) involved in the Summit, the blacks in this blog went off on a tantrum making excuses for the obvious lack of black representation in such an important matter. Again, hypocracy raised it’s pointed little head. Hummm.

My goodness people get off track easily! Bottom line, we as ‘white Americans’ are continuously on the defense and being scolded about something we’ve done or said to offend blacks, as well as other minorities. The natural reaction is that we are getting sick, sick, sick, and tired of the unbelievable double standard and makes us frustrated to tears. The diverse difference in basic characters and mode of thought is so completely different, we will NEVER solve this problem. We are smart enough to know what it is, but too many minorities are too proud, stubborn, ignorant and too busy whining to see it, much less solve it! So it is a stale mate, thus, the tears of Elizabeth that represents the utter frustration of millions of ‘white Americans’!

I dont care if black people wanna use it does not bother me. I’m not defending Jessie I have a whole diffrent reason to dislike him. During Bill Clintons last year as President, I had the honor to meet him and Jessie. It was on what the Clinton whitehouse declared their poverty tour, they came through Eastern Kentucky and visited the factory that I worked at, for 5.15 an hour. When Jessie came through that factory the blacks and whites that worked their were crying as the hugged him.
Then a couple weeks later Jessie was on CNN and he called us racist and unamerican! What the hell? everyone that I seen was very respectful of Jessie Jackson. I shook Clintons hand because he came around the line to, I didnt go out to meet him. Jessie just kind of looked at me and never even made a move towards me.
Just for refrence there were only about ten blacks at the factory, not because they would not hire them but that there were only ten blacks in the whole county.
I myself feel a special connection with much of the black community, I have had roughly the same experience. Being from Appalacia, I get discriminated agianst alot and still do, but the diffrence is that its still OK to make fun of Hillbillies.
But as a side note, I had a great conversation with a monsterous black Secret Service officer. He was guarding the door to the offices that was right beside my work station. He was cool as hell!

The truth is that there are few cultures in the world today which have not, at one time or another, been slaves to another culture. The English, Irish and Scotts were commonly taken as slaves from their own lands by the invading Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries. The very word slave comes from a reference to the slavik region (eastern and central Europe) whose people were taken as slaves by the Vikings and Romans.
When the slave trade in the United States was at its height, the slave ships off the coast of Africa didn’t have to take huge expeditions inland to find their bounty. Warring tribes in Africa were eager to deliver their enemies into the hands of the slave traders for trinkets and trade goods. The Egyptians kept not only the entire Hebrew nation as slaves, but people from many of their neighboring African countries as well. Where’s the inward-directed rage for the African continent’s role in their own slave trade? Most middle and far eastern and African countries either practiced or were forced into slavery by their peers throughout history. Many of them still do!
So…since my ancestors ultimately come from Great Britain (who were the slaves of the Vikings), I’ll be staging a protest in front of the US Norwiegian, Swedish, and Finnish embassies to finally get compensation and retribution for centuries of my people being held as slaves by the Vikings. Other people just wouldn’t understand what a blight my peoples’ oppression is on history and what a profound impact it has on my life today.
One might accuse me of over-simplifying or belittling the role colonial Americans played in the slave trade saying, “You’re going to compare our plight to one that happened a thousand years ago or more?!?” Well…why not? I mean, where is that line that a culture’s history as slaves becomes irrelevant? Eight hundred years from now, will we finally stop hearing about living White Americans’ culpability in slavery? To my knowledge, I’ve never owned a slave…my father never owned a slave…or his father before him. In fact, my ancestors emigrated after the slave trade was long over. Lets assume for a moment that Black America truly IS justified in condemning the current descendants of slave-owners for the actions of their forefathers…why is it that ALL white people are lumped together with them? Its quite likely that many of the people who they are condemning have ancestors who fought and gave their lives to help abolish slavery (which DID happen…regardless of what “current” history books claim the Civil War was about). Talk about your blind, random and indiscriminate bigotry!
So…what’s the difference? Well, for one, the cultures throughout history who’ve overcome slavery, wisely liberated themselves and then moved on. The English liberated themselves and went on changing the world. The Hebrews left Egypt behind them and didn’t look back. North Africa liberated themselves from a weakening Egyptian empire and went about building their own. They aspired to become something better than they were and worked together to become so; and not by holding their former captors responsible for their every failing. History doesn’t record any affirmative action, compensation funds, preferential treatment or civil liberties unions previously needed to help a culture recover from the affects of slavery. Determination, ambition, wits and hard work are much better mortar to build a future with than self-pity, resentment, hostility and a self destructive sense of entitlement.

The whole race problem is the fault of the democrats.

1. Privatize social security. The average black man dies at 65, the year social security benefits start. If he isn’t married with young children, ALL the money he paid into the system ends up in the pocket of a white person with a longer life expectancy. With privatized accounts, he could pass the money he earned onto his children. Maybe make it possible his kid would be the first in the family to buy a house, or use the money to send his grandkid to college.
2. Abortions, aka black genocide. Margaret Sanger was a eugenicist and gave speeches at KKK rallies (from her own autobiography). Blacks are 13% of society yet account for 35% of the abortions. Planned parenthood has 80% of their clinics in minority communities. Not POOR communities for both blacks and whites, but only minority communities. The democrat hide behind the mantra of being pro-choice as blacks are being exterminated. 3. School vouchers. Of course politicians and those that can afford it send their kids to private school. Inner city schools are failing on a daily basis. In inner city schools, besides not getting an education students are in fear for their lives. Education is the way out of poverty, fact. As long as the democrats keep blacks in the failing public school system democrats are happy. When it comes to a special interest group (donation$) like teacher unions, choice isn’t important.
Look at the living conditions of blacks in cities under democrat control compared to cities with republican leadership. The crime has gotten so bad in Chicago that the governor is considering sending in the state troopers and national guard. In Los Angeles, the race problem between blacks and hispanics is growing in leaps and bounds. Innocent kids are being shot down in the street for no other reason than their skin color. Do you need to be reminded of the miscarriages of justice at the hands of government employees in big cities, ala Rodney King and the groom in new york being killed.
Let me ask this of any of your good non-racist democrats…

I used to live in the Uptown neighborhood in Chicago. I lived right next to a little one-lot park that black folk liked to go to.
I had to hear that word at least 200 times a day (i’m using hyperbole of course.. but it was a lot). They would SCREAM it at each other.. all day long. And in the street too.
If they want to use it in public, then anyone should be able to use it.

In spite of life span, Social security helps PEOPLE by alleviating the financial burden of one’s elderly family members so they can use that money for things like education or housing etc.
It also helps if there is a debilitating accident, also when the parent dies young, the kid gets it.

I sympathize with Elisabeth’s view of this topic. It is frustrating to understand why some seem to limit their language to words that are hurtful and seem to be used with the context of dividing a community of people. What is sadly easy to see is the continual human nature of judging others by simple observation. Whether it is their words, site of their clothes, or occupation, we continually place them onto a shelf that satisfies our need to categorize people. I have learned more from my students about the need to observe first and then assess. But I am also not so naive as to let my students think that the world around them will allow them to succeed with everyone playing by the same rules. It is unfortunate that my students will face a world where some will get the job or the raise according to their race or gender- and that concept is perhaps some of what Elisabeth is refereeing to in society. My students are growing up in a different world that their grandparents. We have so many more opportunities than what was available to our grandparents. Yet the media and many celebrities instead insist on obsessing on what sells their material. Our children and future society will only respond to what they are taught and if we continue to teach them that you can be successful by doing nothing (or little), words should be selective to within the audience you speak (forget the fact that you don’t know of their heritage b/c you can’t quite color code them) and if it is on the TV then it must be well researched; then our society will fall into similar turmoil as in other countries where points of view are now points of war.
