On Friday’s Radio Show…
June 20th, 2008, 6:00 PM EDT
• Minnesota Pastor Gus Booth explains why he’s violating IRS rules by telling his congregation that God wants them to vote Republican.
• Economics Professor Richard McKenzie, author of Why Popcorn Costs So Much at the Movies: And Other Pricing Puzzles, tells Alan why he thinks overweight Americans are partly to blame for bloated gas prices.
• It’s the Friday Night Free-For-All!

If it’s qualified as being partial, I don’t see the argument in opposition. Afterall, weight takes more energy to move.
June 20th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Did you know God told me personally that He was voting for John McCain? Thought you all should know. :-P
June 20th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Pastor Booth may be getting a visit from the friendly people at the IRS soon too. Preachers have to be very careful what they say when they preach. I wish some of these preacher would just be quiet and not get themselves into trouble regardless of whom they support or think. Church is no where for politics. If I want to listen to politics I turn on FoxNews Channel!
June 20th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Oh God, it’s Frederick from Aurora, Della’s illegitamate son from Joe the Woman Hater.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Just turned the show on.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
You missed him WFG. The “whiney guy”.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
The one that accuses Alan of picking on him?
June 20th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Yeah. lol. The one who sounds like he’s laughing all the time. One of the times he was on I’m pretty sure you referred to him as the whiney guy although I could be wrong.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Well, if it was him, it’s been a while. I caught some of the guy talking about the floods and the handgun issue.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Socialism>Society/and social behavior (non anti social). A philosophy centered around soceity and the social treatment thereof.
Well, that’s the apolitical assumptive definition I would give to the term.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
In fairness to the Pastor, his message to his congregation doesn’t create a religious test in violation of the Constitution. It might in “spirit,” or whatever, but I don’t see a religious test being created by him expressing his opinion. His congregation can choose not to follow him.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
*a Constitutionally relevant test, that is.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Alan~ You know I love you, man. But it’s become clear to me that you do not particularly care for Christians who do not support abortion and gay rights. People who feel that way are basing their beliefs on their interpretation of Scripture.
I’ve dealt with my share of close-minded Christian jerks, but it’s not fair to treat all of them as if they’re unloving individuals.
Speaking of Christianity, I bought LOST CHRISTIANITIES by Bart Ehrman today. It’s part of my personal study of the Bible, to help me determine what I believe.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
I also bought several new plants today. Coleus and caladium, and a few more begonias. Any of you guys garden?
June 20th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
garden? nay.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
E~ I’m responding to your comment on another thread:
I don’t even want to talk about my son. Yeah, he was THAT BAD today.
I’m doing okay. Do you have renter’s insurance? It’ll cover the water damage to your personal property, but I don’t recommend submitting a claim if you won’t get much after your deductible.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
McCain wants to kill brown people? Yes, that remark will really advance the dialogue.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Is it me, or does this guy sound 15?
June 20th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Alan, would you grill an orthodox Rabbi this way?
Come on, Alan!
June 20th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
I kind of liked that point.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
If you mean the one about McCain, I didn’t. I’m not supporting him in the election, but I don’t agree with applying racist labels. McCain may vary well believe in the legitimacy of his reasons for supporting the war, and assuming there’s innate racism isn’t an argument against that.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
*very well
June 20th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
I don’t have renter’s insurance. But it’s ok as the landlord is paying for everything. It’s a mess here though.
I wish I had a garden. I live in a small apt. here in Manhattan. Not many have actual gardens. But I have a park 2 blocks away.
I have some plants, does that count? I don’t know what kind they are. They’re green though. lol.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Alan has nothing against Christians who do not support abortion and gay rights. He’s against the hypocrisy of some who feel that way.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Girls? Women? Why not just call them idiots?
June 20th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
I do.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
lol, I’m glad they’re still green! You’re doing something right.
Girl, you should really get in to gardening. You can do a lot with an apartment, even if you don’t have a patio.
Here’s an example of what I bought today.
http://www.coleusfinder.org/pictures.php?lang=en
June 20th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
please hang up on this guy
June 20th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
But it’s not hypocrisy, E. Jesus said nothing specifically on abortion, but valuing life is an ideal taken from various parts of the Bible. Example: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” Jeremiah 1:5
I know that there are Christians who take things too far. I’m not defending THEM. I’m defending Christians who hold ALL of Scripture dear, including the parts about love and kindness to others- whether those “others” are the same or not.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
I think that guy has an under aged girlfriend. Age ain’t nothin’ but a number…
June 20th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
That last parts from that song from way back when.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
E, I kid you not- I thought about you when I heard about the 17 girls in MA. I was hoping you’d be online to weigh in on that.
Let me tell you guys, I think that the primary motivation for their decision is all the attention on celebrity babies. Having a baby was one more way to differentiate themselves and be cool.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
There are 670 pics on there. I can’t tell which are yours Cheryl.
Is it Friday today? I am so tired I’m punchy. I feel like I’m drunk lol.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
I really hate those age is a number idiots. Did you see my MySpace bulletin, Cheryl? That was in mock of them.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
I’ve heard some claim they got pregnant because they didn’t feel loved by their parents. Well, now those parents have twice as many people to care for.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Yeah, I want the government involved. older persons are not supposed to take advantage of the youthful and inexperienced. That’s an abuse of trust and power. If the government can’t help set laws, it can’t punish for statutory rape.
Ex post facto.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Poor E. Me and WFG will understand if you fall to sleep.
No, WFG. I haven’t been to MySpace yet. I’ll check it out.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Oh, those are a lot of pics of different types of that plant.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
“Example: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” Jeremiah 1:5″
That is the opinion or philosophy of one person speaking for God.
I tihnk it was Flap who wrote that.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Interruption: Alan, I have a new cousin today. Her name’s Merrick.
Please wish her a happy birthday (literally).
June 20th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Poor E. Me and WFG will understand if you fall to sleep.
It’s probably be my fault.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
What 17 girls in MA? I didn’t see H&C tonight.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:04 pm
At Gloucester High
June 20th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
I’m not Alan but…
Happy Birthday Merrick. And Welcome. :)
June 20th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Hahaha Alana! I like that name. Merrick is a really cool name too.

June 20th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
I think we should eliminte phat people. My jealousy knows no limits.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
what is “punchy”?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
is that like how in virginia we say “cheers”?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
im too tired to read more than 2 sentences at a time. i look later. lol.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
We say cheers? well, I don’t speak normally to begin with, so…
June 20th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Yeah, but Epiphany, IF you are a Christian who believes that the Bible is inerrant then Jeremiah 1:5 is the word of God. I think to believe the gospel message you pretty much have to believe that at LEAST the original text was inerrant…if not then the gospel message is generally untrustworthy. So from a Christian perspective, I think that points to ALL abortion being bad.
Secularly, late term past viability is infanticide. I’ll use Al Gore’s words against you libs: THE DEBATE IS OVER, it’s killing a baby! Early term is up for debate. :D
June 20th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Are you too tired to read two sentences?
That’s what you say.
Will you see this sentence?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
“what is “punchy”?”
Google it.
Hahahahaha!!!
June 20th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
“Punchy” is basically “punch-drunk.” Kinda in a sleepy, dazed state. Stay up all night and you’ll be punchy in the morning with no sleep.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
lol… here comes Flap!
love ya man
June 20th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
It sounds like English slang.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:18 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Is it Jainists who think that even killing bugs is evil? It’s an Eastern religion I remember back from undergrad. Kinda like PETA but even further. Pretty interesting. Stop killing bugs Cheryl! :-P
June 20th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
alan, don’t mess with my coffee man. that’s the only thing that will ever make me fall out of love with you.

June 20th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
I’M A MURDERER!!!
you can kill them with a spray bottle full of dish soap and water. you spray them, and then about 7 seconds later they can’t move anymore, and their little legs slowly stop wiggling. i felt bad at first, but then i didn’t bc i didn’t want them in my home around me and my kid. it’s us or them! they’ve got to go!
and they’re not even brown…
June 20th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
hey, let’s make fun of epiphany since she fell asleep!

LOL
June 20th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
I don’t drink, I’ve had a few in my life, love an occasional cigar maybe twice a year. Hate coffee, love COKE ZERO! I’m addicted to Coke Zero…they must put something in it.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
ha ha, E is a better date than that Japanese computer robot thing. all you have to do is pay for one glass, and then she’s loaded.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
Modestly overweight, yes.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
the moral of that story is DUMB, WFG

June 20th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Moral of what story?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
bunny foo foo? didn’t read the lyrics.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
I’m here…I know the board is empty without my right-wing presence. :)
Epiphany, Coke Zero is like Diet Coke except it tastes more like regular Coke and it’s also for COOL people. Only nerds and out-of-touch people drink Diet Coke when Zero is around!
June 20th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
97 comments?!?!? What the hell have I missed tonight???
June 20th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
I wonder if Tim Russert will lead Jesus’ army against the Count of Anti Christo.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
I am 7′2″ and weight 87 pounds. my meaurements are 12-12-14 I’ve never seen coke zero.

June 20th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Coke Zero is good, but Diet Dr. Pepper is the best no cal soda if you have the choice.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
epiphany, you sound like you’re just one flu away from gracing the cover of vogue magazine.
wfg, why’d you post the link if you didn’t check out the lyrics? on the bottom of the page it gives the moral of the story.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Coming up on Coast To Coast, Noory speaks with someone about Starbucks spy chips in its employees.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
the above “one flu away” comment is from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. i have the feeling that the guys won’t get that joke.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
pooh makes a good point- diet dr pepper is pretty good.
ever tried it flap?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
I posted it because I knew the first few lyrics had the words foo foo. why else?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
diet dp’s crap, i say.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Right-wing ass my ass! :-P
June 20th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
“Coke Zero is like Diet Coke except it tastes more like regular Coke”
How can that be? lol
June 20th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Agree with WFG, Diet Dr. Pepper is mediocre.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
i can’t believe we’re still talking about starbucks.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
I’m not big on coke. i’m more a mountain dew, pibb, grape soda guy.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
lol, flap.
okay, here’s the thing about starbks- their coffee is pretty good. i occassionally treat myself to one of their expensive cups. the best way to go with a coffee shop is to just order a cup of the house blend, then you’re only spending about $2 instead of $5.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
Epiphany, I think the sweetener is the same they use for regular Coke or something…I heard they used it in Europe for YEARS before marketing it in this country.
In other words, European Diet Coke might be the same as Coke Zero. But I’m not positive.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
I drink mostly 1% milk fruit juices ice tea coffee ice coffee tomato juice v8
June 20th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
those are all good sodas, but they each have several SPOONFULLS of sugar in them. i used to drink sprite and grape soda all the time. however, it’s better to go with diet. once you get used to the taste, regular soda will taste disgustingly sweet to you. my mom and brother are diabetic, so i got used to drinking diet in high school.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
is dunkin donuts coffee really that good?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
E, are you one of those health nuts?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
“I think the sweetener is the same they use for regular Coke or something”
You mean SUGAR? lol
June 20th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
I would like to be a health nut but not really i guess. I do try to eat healthier stuff.
I rarely drink soda, processed foods, haven’t been in a fast food joint in decades etc…
I drink about a quart to half gallon of 1% milk a day.
I LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVE MILK!
June 20th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
dunkin coffee is good. i just don’t have one in a convenient location. we have a gas station here called WAWA, and i like their coffee. i also get coffee at borders books, bc i’m there a lot.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
Her being a healthnut would be much more interesting if she wasn’t Lazarus’ original girl friend.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
Milk keeps you pure.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
ewww, milk is gross. i don’t know why i don’t like it, i just don’t.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
do you mean lucifer?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
there’s not a dunkin donuts in town here…not that i drink a lot of coffee but still would like to see what the fuss is about
June 20th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
there are a million starbucks in nyc. there’s one in my closet
June 20th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Well I KNOW Coke has sugar in it…I looked it up and Zero has more acesulfame potassium than diet coke.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
dunkin donuts is great too
June 20th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
one in your closet? if you get two, send those lovers to california.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
God bless NYC
June 20th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
big shotgun cheney?
i like it.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
I’ve got a lag.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
acesulfame potassium? Oh well that explains it.
acesulfame potassium is very tasty.
(im teasing you flap)
i still don’t get zero coke. None of you have defined what it really is or why it is different from regular or diet.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
during the break, do you guys hear the story about the Ethiopian woman who passed away named Dinka-doo? it’s for Sponsor a Child through World Vision.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
i don’t know why it’s diff from diet, but it just tastes better.
but that is a good question… why have a diet coke AND a coke zero?
June 20th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
From:
http://www.theamericanmind.com/2005/07/14/coke-zero-better-than-a-zero/
Coke Zero has a combination of aspartame and acesulfame potassium. Aspartame is what was in original Diet Coke. Aspartame is what gives Diet Coke a harsh, chemical aftertaste. There was some of that with Coke Zero, but the acesulfame potassium softens the edges. It does succeed in tasting more like original Coca-Cola.
June 21st, 2008 at 12:00 am
“I’ve got a lag.”
Ya do? Well hell so do I! I got 2 of them and 2 arms too.
Yes i am lame. and punchy. Lolllllllo
June 21st, 2008 at 12:00 am
i’ve got an uneccesary a, eh.
June 21st, 2008 at 12:01 am
People like different things…hardcore diet coke fans may not be able to acquire a taste for Zero although I think it tastes a lot better, especially when ice cold!
And with my propensity to diabetes (runs in the family), sugar drinks are BAAAAD news.
June 21st, 2008 at 12:02 am
pooh, you got your ice cream tonight? i’ve got that chocalate on a stick thing with the little pieces of chocolate and other stuff on it.
June 21st, 2008 at 12:03 am
NO I DON’T HAVE IT. I JUST WENT TO THE FREEZER AND IT’S NOT THERE. IF MY SON WEREN’T ALREADY ASLEEP-
June 21st, 2008 at 12:04 am

A couple random points:
First, the “skinny” woman caller with the comments about the amped-up-for-fat-people air conditioning on airplanes doesn’t seem to understand that they have to heat the plane while in the air, and that the only thing between her and her own hypothermic death is a thin skin of aluminum (or composite, depending on the plane).
Secondly, on the whole the comments here have been many, many times cleverer, more articulate and concise than his callers. Where are you guys during the show?

Interesting point about the air condition, Adrienne.
Also, I didn’t hear the anti-fat people guy say anything about how the increased population has also contributed to an increase in oil demand. Look at how much oil China is using, and damned near 10 out of 10 of the Chinese are thin.

FISA Amendments Act 2008:
The right to have your day in Court is not something to take lightly, nor is it strictly a liberal or conservative issue; rather it is a principle of Liberty and Justice. The new FISA issue before Congress is an issue that will remove the Constitutional principle of a right of redress of grievances. The House has said through by their vote on 08-20-08 that they do not care about oversight (checks and balances) and possibly will ruin our Fourth Amendment Protection to Privacy. They have said that they would trade Liberty for the perception of safety, thus proving B. Franklin a wise man whose warning rings true now more than ever. All Americans should feel a sense of sadness towards the Yes votes in the House on this first day of Summer and potentially the last day of reason and logic by those who voted with reckless abandon for Liberty. This Act is an affront to Freedom, a gift to Tyranny and a pardon for illegal activity. “Driven from every other corner of the earth, freedom of thought and the right of private judgment in matters of conscience, direct their course to this happy country as their last asylum.” Sam Adams-
1791 – The 4th Amendment: “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” Amendment 1: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” The First Amendment and the Fourth Amendment may suffer damage that the Founding Fathers would shed a tear for if the Senate does not correct the bad judgment exhibited by the House. Pray that they see the light of Liberty.
