US Soldier Uses Koran For Target practice
May 18, 2008The soldier’s name has not been revealed, but Major General Jeffrey Hammond read a letter of apology from the soldier to local tribal sheiks.
“I sincerely hope that my actions have not diminished the partnership that our two nations have developed together.”
The Koran in question, perforated with bullet holes, was found by Iraq police.
Yeah, I heard about this. I’m going to be honest here- when I first saw the headline I snickered, thinking “our soldiers have a right to be pissed, and I’m not surprised they took it out on the Quran, and it’s actually kind of funny”. Then, I stopped smiling when I imagined them playing target practice with the Bible.
Just bein’ honest.
does this mean we cant shoot at bin laden targets either ? there are just as many hate groups who burn american flags,fly planes into american cities etc. the way I see it,out of all the millions of dollars and thousands of lives lost. One destroyed koran does not break my heart.
For God’s sake that is truly repulsive. What a disgusting and disrespectful thing to do. I wouldn’t hold the entire US army responsible for the actions of an obviously insensitive moron though.
We’re over there allegedly trying to “win hearts and minds” and this certainly isn’t helpful. Trashing the religion and the holy book of the people you’re trying to help?
The damage is done and it won’t be forgotten but I’m glad they apologized.

The Koran shouldn’t be desecrated…disrespectful to people’s beliefs and a hella bad PR move.

Hey, that’s not true! I agree with the comparison to shooting the Bible, I just can’t say that I had the same initial reaction. That’s not to say I fault you for it, I’m in no position to judge. :)

If it’s ok to burn a flag, it’s ok to burn or shoot a Koran. But toilet paper would be a better use for the koran.
I dont agree with shooting the koran as target practice but give the guy a break.He is being a little Gung Ho and doesnt know any better.Remember we send kids to war.
The only thing the Koran is good for is to be riddled with bullets since it was written by a false prophet.
Robert~ excellent point. Also, the psychology of war is something that those who haven’t been to war have a had time understanding. I haven’t been to war, so I have a very hard time judging what soldiers do (outside of something like a civilian massacre).

I have to hand it to muslims on the fact that they tend to treat the Koran much better than most christians treat their bibles.
Where is your bible now? In a shelf? A drawer? Dusty?
Muslims never let the book fall below their waist and wear special belts to always hold it high, in the home the Koran is always in the highest possible place and it is never written in, underlined, or highlighted.
Do I agree with this sacred treatment of scripture?
Well not really, I personally think God values the scripture in your heart more than the words in the book, but I think it offers valuable perspective on just how insulted muslims must feel when they see their holy book riddled with bullet holes.
At this point we could probably be executing Muslim holy men by the bushel basket, on a live feed to Al Jazeera, and regional opinion of the US would hardly change one iota, because we’ve been so well-led.
He Should have shot a Bible becasue the fuckin Christians are the crazy ones. Aren’t Christians the ones that attack abortion clinics and protests funreals of gay Americans and even protest war veterans because of the Dont ask Dont tell policy? There is a big difference between Christians and Christian fundamentalists. Same as with any other religion.

Did you hear the show last week when Oliver North was on? The title of his book is something something “… War Against Radical Islam”. The key word is “Radical”. Please remember that it’s the radicals and the extremists that are the problem…
And most times “Christianity” is used as an excuse for what the fanatics would do anyway.
Wars, hypocrisy, fanaticism and genocide have plenty of history before “religion” was used to justify it.
I find that this is bad PR for our military. This should have never been done especially in Iraq.
