They’d Rather Make Abortions Illegal Than Reduce Them

February 18, 2008

And Bill Clinton is correct. But they’re going to attack him for his “temper” anyway.  Facing a sign Sunday in Stubenville, Ohio, reading “Abortion Kills Children”, Clinton correctly noted that during his presidency the abortion rate went down, without making it illegal.

Abortions declined between 1993 and 2000 from 1.5 million to 1.31 million, according to the Alan Guttmacher Institute. The number continued to decline to 1.21 million through 2005, the last year of available data from AGI.

After a protester shouted another question about abortion, Clinton responded, “We disagree with you. You want to criminalize women and their doctors and we disagree. … If you were really pro-life, you would want to put every doctor and every mother as an accessory to murder in prison. And you won’t say you want to do that because you know that, because you know that you wouldn’t have a lick of political support.”

How “pro-life” is it to lock up doctors who perform abortions and criminalize women who have them?

  1. That a good point, never thought of that. Conservatives wouldn’t want to criminalize doctors and patients or they’d lose support. Why doesn’t being “pro life” extend to health care for conservatives? Health care is “pro life.”

  2. Ain’t it something that all these so-called “pro-life” people are usually the first ones in favor for the DEATH PENALTY? Biggest hypocrites on the planet.

KEEP YOUR GRUNGY HANDS OFF OF MY UTERUS AND BODY AND YOUR HYPOCRITICAL PHONEY RELIGIOUS VALUES OUT OF MY LIFE!

GODDAMN CONTROL FREAKS!!! I’M SO SICK OF YOU!!!!!

WAY TO GO PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON!!!

(Sorry fot the yelling but sometimes I just have to)

  3. A-holes, ignorant bafoons, god , they make me sick ! They confuse dogma with biology. It’s not a child until it’s born, damn do I want to go on and on. Bill made big points by holding the line ( the line that the majority holds )against this jerk and all those fools he represents.

  4. What is incredible is that on Hannity & Colmes, they completely ignored this story and just covered the story of the Obama suppoter heckling Clinton…

Another reason why rightwing Republicans control the agenda on Hannity & colmes.

  5. MANDATORY ABORTIONS FOR EVERYONE OVER 27!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Save the fetus! We need them to fight and die in an unwarranted war when they turn 18!

  7. Epiphany, you have the hypocrisy and intellectual dishonesty completely reversed. The death penalty is for people who have committed heinous crimes. If it meant stopping the modern-day holocaust of abortion, I’d be happy to trade the death penalty, by the way. Anyone with an ounce of intellectual honesty will realize that late-term abortion is infanticide. It’s a human rights issue and has absolutely nothing to do with religion.

The abortion death penalty is unilaterally committed by people like you who speciously believe that “your body” includes a distinct lifeform that is growing inside of you. Can you kill your infant because he/she resides in “your house”? Can I kill “my children” because I own them? Slavery, people. No different, except this type of slavery always involves DEATH.

And if abortion is okay, why make them rare? Seems like if it’s not slaughtering a baby then it’s a pretty darn good birth control technique that can be used even to the point of partially delivery.

Certain instances are perhaps necessary when the baby has a 0% chance of survival, but generally speaking physicians should not be allowed to kill unborn children as a method of birth control. That violates the Hippocratic oath and everything that a physician is supposed to stand for.

I will even grant you pro-abortion people first trimester abortions. The baby is not viable, so a decent case could be made that it’s not really a lifeform yet. But for those of you liberals who are for second and third term abortions, where is your humanity? Aren’t you pro-human rights?

  8. I’m pro choice, mostly for pragmatic reasons, but I also do not put much stock in the hypocrisy argument pertaining to war and the death penalty. Clearly, the circumstances and consequences aren’t exactly the same. Oh, I’m also against the death penalty.

  9. Flap. You see a fetus as a child. And I see a fetus as a fetus. It’s as simple as that. I know that having an abortion is a very stressful thing to go through but it is a necessary thing for the women who decide to do so. The reasons for which are NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. I don’t say that because I’m trying to push your buttons, I’m just stating plain and clear how it is.

I am not “pro-abortion”. That is disingenuous on your part. I am in favor of women having the right to decide for themselves whether or not to create and bring forth children. I am pro-the woman will make the choice whether to have the proceedure and destroy the fetus or instead carry the fetus full term and have a beautiful healthy baby. That is quite different from being “pro-abortion” and just a tactic that so-called pro-lifers use. It doesn’t impress me. A fetus is a potential child and is not yet a human being. That is the way I feel about it and you are not going to change my mind. I am not going to change your mind either. And that is fine.

I am NOT in favor of late term abortions for no reason other than the woman just changed her mind at the last minute. But most, from what I read, are necessary to either save the life of the mother or because the child will be born with their spine or brain on the outside of their body. It’s very, very sad but sometimes a proceedure like that has to be done.

I also see that it is the height of hypocrisy to be “pro-life” and to care about the so-called “unborn children” but not to care about BORN human beings, no matter how heinous their crimes, who are on death row. They are still God’s children as well. Shouldn’t it be up to God to decide when it is that they give up the right to that life instead of letting Man decide instead? I am against the death penalty because even if one innocent person dies this way, to me, that is an atrocity. To me allowing the state to kill any prisioner actually, that is murder. To kill a living human being when they have been rendered defenseless and segregated from the public.

I am much more concerned with BORN human beings than “UNborn” human beings because there is NO SUCH THING. That is like calling me an undead person. Potential human beings do not concern me. That is the business of other people, NOT MINE. Almost 50 million BORN human beings without health care which includes 9 million BORN CHILDREN is my greater concern. If you’re so concerned about the life of the child/human being than why are conservatives like you not just as concerned about the uninsured human beings out there who need healthcare which for most are LIFE and death issues?

I don’t know you personally so I am not necessarily talking about you but in general and in the broadest terms, I think that most conservatives couldn’t give a damn about human life. They are FOR the death penalty, against health care for the uninsured if it means a few more tax dollars so screw ‘em, pro-WAR, against teaching sexuality courses in schools and distribution of condoms which would reduce pregnancy and abortion, AIDS prevention programs, etc. etc. It is all about controlling peoples lives. Controlling peoples “morality”. Getting all the rest of us to live your way because it makes you feel better about your own lives. To live in an orderly black and white world with no shades of grey. Maybe it makes ypu feel less fearful because you have control of something. In actuality one has very little control in life and yeah it’s damn scary but that is how it is. Once I give up my right to chose whether or not I create life I have given up the right to control my own individual humanity. And that is all I really have.

The reason people want to make abortion rare is that it is an unpleasant proceedure. I would also like to see tooth decay and cancer made rare because the medical proceedures are mentally and physically unpleasant as well. That is why I am for prevention through better health habits and for as much information as possible. With unwanted pregnancy and abortion, that means as much information and birth control as possible should be available to all including, especially, young people. But of course conservatives and the Christian Right are against it. They like to put their hope into “abstinance programs” which have been a documented failure.

I can discuss this with you further but this is why many, including Alan, are so tired of debating this subject. I have done so for decades. It just goes on and on and on. Like this post. Your’re probably sick of it too. It would be like my trying to get you to become a liberal Democrat when you’re a tried and true conservative Republican (or an Independant). It’s not going to happen. This is a very personal type of issue. And it really should stay that way.

  10. Whew!

  11. Phew ! Epiphany you said it all!! These same people probably want less government except when it pertains to intruding their dogma onto the rest of us.

  12. I’m pro-life,but smart enough to let my wife decide, lol.

Seriusly though,I’m for women having the choice. I cannot in good conscience expect my values to be everyone else’s,nor do I think Constitutionally I should place my morality or values on some pedestal and expect others to blindy follow my lead.

We’re just far too diverse a society for such nonsense.
