Gay Penguins Ruin Kids’ Lives

February 18, 2008

In Loudoun County, Virginia, the story of Roy and Silo, two penguins from New York’s Central Park Zoo, drove one parent to complain that the school was promoting a “gay agenda”, resulting in the book And Tango Makes Three being removed from general circulation. In spite of several national book awards, the book has also been restricted in schools in Shiloh, Illinois, and removed entirely from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district in North Carolina.

Here is a synopsis of the true story that will destroy the lives of young children and make them turn gay:

Roy and Silo, two male penguins, are “a little bit different.” They cuddle and share a nest like the other penguin couples, and when all the others start hatching eggs, they want to be parents, too. Determined and hopeful, they bring an egg-shaped rock back to their nest and proceed to start caring for it. They have little luck, until a watchful zookeeper decides they deserve a chance at having their own family and gives them an egg in need of nurturing. The dedicated and enthusiastic fathers do a great job of hatching their funny and adorable daughter, and the three can still be seen at the zoo today.

  1. So, um, damn Mother Nature and her gay agenda!

  2. Firstly, it apparently isn’t clear even to the staff of the Central Park Zoo whether the real-life penguins are in fact gay, or engaging in what we humans describe as “gay” behavior. Secondly, the real-life Roy has apparently abandoned Silo and hooked up with a female penguin, so it could be he’s bi, not gay, or he was gay, but got over it, or it could be simply that we humans don’t know what the heck we’re talking about.

Thirdly, does a book like this teach young kids to be tolerant of “differentness,” or does it teach them emulate it? Are we smart enough to know what goes on in the mind of a five year old?

Frankly, I think schools should discourage any form of hostility toward gays, and they should do it by hammering home the idea that here in America you have a right to live any damn way you want, so long as you do no harm.

  3. I read that book. Oh my God! I must have turned gay without knowing it!

  4. They should teach in school that homosexuality does not happen in nature. Animals don’t [swing] that way ! LOL. Try doin it with a male bear, see what happens, report back. Write your will first!

  5. I might think about this the same way as Alan, but then again I’ve seen Soviet propaganda material, such as a book that they gave to Uzbek schoolchildren. It presented all the wonders of assimilating and losing the Uzbek ways. No doubt Alan would just consider that to be a wonderful kids’ book, without realizing its intent.

  6. I think the issue should be less the morality of this than its practicality. I don’t know how penquins feed. Do they fend for themselves? Does the community share? Or whatever. More importantly, do Sean and Alan embrace? Can I be embraced? Oh, won’t someone hold me? Does anyone else think Cobblepot (The Penquin) is handsome?

  7. Gay animals DO exist in nature. Fundamentalist preachers lie and say they don’t–and that’s all the “evidence” the Fundies need. They’re minds are made up–don’t confuse them with facts!

  8. Roy’s real name is “Hannity” - but he uses “Roy” to hide the shame related to using “Hannity”.

  9. Oh for God’s sake, its not just about “gay penguins” its about the universal aspect of gay behavior in most species of animals.

There is an entire exhibition at Oslo Norway that celebrates gay behavior in the animal kingdom so anyone having a problem with “gay penguins” or people need to take it up with the entire animal kingdom.

In other words, its their problem with reality.

The animal kingdom seems to be saying, “We’re here, we’re queer… GET OVER IT!”

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6066606.stm
‘Organisers reported early criticism of the project, and being told by one opponent they would “burn in hell’.

But there has been strong interest in an aspect of animal behaviour the museum says is quite common.

It says homosexuality has been observed among 1,500 species, and that in 500 of those it is well documented. “

  10. Yes, TLB, because that book seeks to assimilate our schoolchildren into the homosexual agenda and cause them to lose their innocent ways…

False analogy here…you’re saying that the Soviet readers were propaganda, and then you’re saying that this children’s book is like that , so therefore this children’s book is about the same as the Soviet reader that sought to destroy Uzbek culture.

    get real…

  11. What I meant to say is that you’re saying that Soviet readers were propaganda (i won’t dispute you there), this children’s book is like the Soviet reader so therefore it is propaganda. Nowhere is the homosexual agenda trying to convert our youth. It is only a scare-tactic used by the right-wing to demonize people whom they fear.

  12. Bonobos will do it with ANYONE of their species, just like our Republican congressmen, only the bonobos don’t do it on the down low. Elect bonobos, dump the hypocrites.

  13. Oh my! If you think this is bad, you should see what Squirtle is up to!!

    http://www.dottygale.com/p1x/squirtle.jpg

Are our children safe from the friends of Dorothy?

  14. Check out the studies at the Univ of Washington regarding homosexual sheep. Pretty common.

  15. “They should teach in school that homosexuality does not happen in nature.”

WRONG. There IS homosexuality in the animal kingdom and it ain’t just with humans. I’ve seen it documented on National Geographic TV and a few other places. There IS homosexuality amongst the Great Apes more than any other species and they are our closest cousins.

And yes as someone else mentioned, oh my, those Bonobos! LOL. There are a lot of gay Bonobos out there. But sex is their way of life. They use sex as a way of easing social conflicts and just to say GOOD MORNING to each other. There is little violence in their community. Obviously they are an evolved species.

As far as kids emulating such behavior, I can tell you that when I was a kid and there were no books like this that kids were fooling around with each other out of experimentation including myself. But I grew up to be as heterosexual as they come. I slso grew up to be a very tolerant person but many did not. I learned to be tolerant and accepting from my parents but a lot of kids are unfortunately not that lucky. Parents seem to love to pass on their worst fears and bitter, narrow minded judgements to their children. Really shameful.

I hope every kid in America reads that book. It does teach tolerance and some day when all of us are gone I hope our country can rise above all this prejudice and fear to accept each other for how we actually are.

  16. Homosexuality is prevalent in pretty much all species of birds and mammals. Anyone who debates this is being willfully stupid, but then no one ever went broke over-estimating how stupid at least parts of the American public is willing to be.

  17. Homosexual sheep? Bah. I don’t believe it. They were only groomed to be that way by their Republican Congressmen owners. Surely they can be cured.

  18. For crying out loud. I had a male dog when I was a kid and he used to hump anything and everything. I can’t tell you how many human legs he humped, male and female. I guess he was bi.

  19. As a gay man, I am quite surprised and happy that I have the power to destroy our civilization. Hitler couldn’t do it, tv couldn’t do it, even those little yellow peeps that come out at Easter couldn’t do it.

But if I marry another guy, that’ll do it.

  20. I’m glad everybody’s got a sense of humor, because a lot of hysterical yelling and screaming never solves anything, but I’m not sure so sure it’s a great idea for authorities like schools to be painting a rosy picture about homosexuality for the benefit of young kids.

If this was middle school or high school I’d say fine, discuss it in depth, because it should be discussed.

  21. Yea, and some of these GAY animals mate for life!- well documented.

  22. I love when we all talk amongst ourselves about how this type of literature may or may not damage children. I would venture to guess if you asked children, they probably love this story and find the penguin’s story delightful and engaging. But I don’t have any children to ask.

  23. I turned gay just by hearing about the book.

    Powerful stuff.

  24. Clearly, we need a constitutional amendment to ban penguins.

  25. LOLOLOL nikto!!!

    (and others as well!)

  26. Who’s your Emperor Penquin!

  27. teach diversity

  28. Just get it over with and show them Buddy G, My Two Moms and Me. (www.BuddyG.tv — very cute animated cartoon series for kids)

I’m laughing. Obviously all you have to do is start telling kids at a young age that men should have intimate relations with men and women should have intimate relations with women . . . then they will all be gay. Why? Because apparently all of us straight people are ready to fall over the edge if we ever just see a living being exhibit gay behavior.

Gays must be much more secure in their sexuality - we try to force straight behavior down their throats from the time they are born and . . . they are still gay!

Being straight is so hard - in fact, if I see one more gay bird - I’m leaving my husbands and kids for the neighbor’s wife!

  29. Funny, right wingers cite a supposed two thousand year old tradition to “justify” efforts to outlaw others’ families.

Ancient Christians like Aquinas and Augustine argued that homosexuality is bad because to have non-hetero sex is to act like an animal. We sinners were supposed to be ruled by animal passions rather than by divine reason.

But now, right wing Christians apparently say that we don’t act like animals when we love people of our own sex. Instead, we’re we’re supposed to be sinners because we’re ruled by our minds.

Right wing Christians are queer people. Are they still Christian?

  30. If you give in to those who want to censor everything they don’t want to see or know, pretty soon we’re living in Talabanistan.

  31. Let’s not discuss gay penguins with kids - just set ‘em in front of the tube and let them watch people get their faces shot off and stuff like that so that we don’t confuse or disturb ‘em.

  32. I too have seen soviet propaganda and this is not it. Do you know how I know? a) This is not a soviet book b) I don’t suffer from paranoid delusions where little kids books are a threat to my way of life. It’s crazy time in Virginia, send in Walter Freeman.

  33. baby jeezus hates it when penguins are nice to each other.

  34. The actual story of the real penguins is not exactly the happily-ever-after fairy tale the book presents it to be.

The real life drama is more akin to a soap opera, with ‘divorce’, a shocking venture into heterosexuality, and a daughter who follows in her non-genetic parents’ webbed footsteps (so much for the gay gene idea).

Roy & Silo - Why Gay Penguins Are NOT a Good Example for Homosexuality

  35. Does Dick Cheney have a music video now?!?

  36. “Ancient Christians like Aquinas and Augustine argued that homosexuality is bad because to have non-hetero sex is to act like an animal.”

Aquinas and Augustine didn’t write the Bible. Their viewpoints don’t reflect those of all modern Christians by any means, since they both preceded Protestantism and Calvinism by several centuries, and were also much less educated than the average person is today.

“But now, right wing Christians apparently say that we don’t act like animals when we love people of our own sex. Instead, we’re we’re supposed to be sinners because we’re ruled by our minds.”

It’s easy to blame everything on ‘right-wing Christians’ when you don’t realise that there’s a large number of conflicting viewpoints within that group. The MSM shows us the wackos that want to execute all gays or whatever, but they don’t bother to inform their audience about moderate views on the subject; they just contrast it with pro-gay churches. Those in between, who think of gays as regular sinners instead of just angels or demons, are ignored.

  37. It seems to me that this story is very much about adoption than homosexuality, isn’t it? How do you tell children (who might have been adopted) that adoption means love for your children? I think this story is a very nice way to make children aware of the fact that
    - two same -person wex, even in love cannot breed.
    - any two people who cannot breed, can still have children, nurture them and love them.
It’s a veru nce way to explain adoption to litle ones in my eyes, sweet, clear and very delicate.
Once again, some extreme fundamentalists are seeing evil where it is not, and above all, their own fantasies in a tale certainly aimed at some other goal than promoting homosexuality.
Maybe we should try and ban the “promote stupidity” rules.

  38. My marriage! It’s threatened!

  39. Ah… also I wanted to say that, unlike the kagaroos, with the penguins, it’s always (even in heterosexual couples) the father who is incharge of keeping the egd warm during the very cold period… At least for Emperor Penguins… Only whhen the chock has come out of the egg, does the mother take care of it to feed the chick and even then, there is a kind of dispute between mother and father… Teh emperor penguin fathers are actually quite some heroes in my eyes, as they remain protecting the ege the entire time it needs it, without even going to eat anything intil the chick is born. They lose about half their weight over that period of time.
Also and this might explain the reason why one of the penguns might have gone “busexual” after… If I remeber well, the pensuins’ faithfulness to each other is yearly… One a year they change mate and then are faithful to the new mate for another full year… Any body tell me if I am wrong there, because these are only memories froma bokk I read years ago…
Whenever I thought about that, I always wondered what was happening to the poor penguin (male or female) who nelonged to a group of penguins the total of which was an odd number… I guess the answer is, no sex for a full year… yes but then also you d’ont have to lose half your weight nurturing the egge if you’re a male! lol

  40. “…the real-life Roy has apparently abandoned Silo and hooked up with a female penguin, so it could be he’s bi, not gay, or he was gay, but got over it, or it could be simply that we humans don’t know what the heck we’re talking about.” - RC

You’ve missed the obvious reason Roy went straight. Thousands of Christians, roused by Rou’s sinful moral depravity, simply prayed away the penguin gay.

Hate the sin, love the small flightless bird!

(On a related note, the folks at Concerned Women of America are researching whether or not flightless bird gay-itude is what killed off the Dodo. Look for the Discovery Institute to publish findings soon.)

    .

  41. What does it mean when my female dog tries to hump my male dog??????
I need to know what perverse sexual practice I’m about to emulate.

  42. I am a seasonal zookeeper finishing a zoology degree in college. Homosexuality does happen in the wild, and in zoos. Of course these animals don’t “LOVE” each other like the human concept of love. I don’t know what kind of penguins the book is talking about, but jackass penguins (the kind many zoos have) pair up during the breeding season and bond with their partner, something we refer to as “pair bonding.” They aren’t in love, but they do share a bond in order to raise their brood. Sometimes males form pair bonds with males, and females form pair bonds with females. Of course this doesn’t work well in the wild, because they can not produce offspring, which is what the animal kingdom is all about.

But humans are a bit different. Humans can feel this abstract emotion we call love. Humans do not exist on the planet solely to reproduce. Humans can adopt children if they can not have children of their own. So for humans, homosexuality can work. If only some seriously intolerant people would realize this country isn’t a theocracy and gays aren’t put on the earth to corrupt children.

  43. My 2 daughters have had access to this book and have read it a few times in the past 2 years. The oldest, now 8, cannot understand why they have been told in school that the book may be taken out of the library. (It won’t. Even in suburban/rural Upsate NY, there is a large majority of parental approval for this book). Young children are not sexualized naturally at that age, so they do not understand or care about a preceived sexual immorality of penguins. I tried my best to explain the moral debate to them and they think it is silly to make a fuss over a book. So do I. My marriage hasn’t been destroyed by this book and it never will be.

  47. There are no gay animals? Sheesh, tell that to my dad’s two very male, very partnered male cats. The fact that they’re weren’t going to produce any kittens (and that they were both neutered) didn’t stop them. And this was in a house with two female cats.

  49. but are those (real life) penguins having scatological intercourse? I’m just askin.

Basically it’s an instrinsic lie, because the two it took to Tango weren’t sigfried and Roy - i mean Silo and Roy.

    Nature people.

  50. wud it be cliched to say, “thats SOOOO GAYYYy?” Cuz its not. its funny. interesting.

  51. [...] Gay Penguin Ruins Kids Lives [...]

  52. How DARE they cuddle!

  53. There is homosexuality in nature. Animals oft refer to it when in dire need of a basic instinct.

I believe this is just another case of the country gone wrong with common sense being thrown out the window, and an inability with parents talking to their kids.

Its total jack. Everything has to be politically correct and safe for the future. I am in fear of how big brother takes its legs next time.

Get ticketed for swearing in a public place? I fear that is closer than it seems.

  54. Animals don’t know gay from straight. They don’t know they are “different” or that they are “supposed to” feel shame.

The part I found so sad was this couple of penguins trying to hatch a rock. The instinct to parent is THAT strong.

The story of these penguins is intriguing and sweet. To put human morality on it is ridiculous.

  55. well ok then.. that is so wrong that they are teaching kids this! what has this world come too?!!!

  56. For Monkey’s sake PEOPLE WAKE UP!!! Don’t U C the hidden agenda in the book? It is promoting love for ROCKS. I don’t care if it is oval shaped or square,Rock love is just wrong. It is love for rocks and dinner rolls that started this country on it’s downfall in the 50’s. Forget the penguins, let an oval shaped rock or an overcooked dinner roll, thrown by some homophobic toothless uneducated hateful bigoted hypocrite, that probably couldn’t get a date in the gay world or any other, hit yo head and I’ll bet you’ll wake up then.
It’s rocks and rolls that R ruining this great and powerful country of ours. Do U think that the Pillsbury Dough boy is gay. Cheekychimp thinks he is POPIN FRESH cute!!! MMMMMM Good! Share Love

  57. P.S. oh yea, as a Chimp I must add that Zoos R Evil too!

  58. mmmmm rocks.

  59. very interesting article! But I do not think that the book will raise any homosexual issues to the kids, that is IF their parents have done their duties right. By that I mean to show the kids that male goes with female, that’s the natural way of things.

Let’s face it people, our social attitude is formed based upon the treatment and values we got from our parents. As far as gay people are concerned, I’ve read so many times that one is born gay, it’s in his DNA and it’s only a matter of discovering it sooner or later. If you’re not born with this, then no matter what women will be the most beautiful creations in the world in your eyes :)

  60. Seems that the Commonwealth of Virginia’s tourism motto “Virginia is for lovers” is only meant for straight penguins.

  61. That book should have been banned entirely. It doesn’t take much to see a gay agenda in it and teaching it to kids is tatamount to child abuse.

Look at the first few lines :

Roy and Silo, two male penguins, are “a little bit different.” They cuddle and share a nest like the other penguin couples, and when all the others start hatching eggs, they want to be parents, too.

Doesn’t that sound gay to you?

Being gay has nothing to do with genetics. You’re gay because you choose to be so.

Let’s face it, there is a lot of hypocrisy out there. Okay, we know say it is acceptable to be gay. But then the very same people would probably say that a brother marrying his sister is unacceptable. Why the double standard? I mean the first goes against the order of nature but yet is deemed okay but why not the second?

These are kids for God’s sake. Keep them away from stuff like this. Or else you might as well, have Playboy as reading material and watch porn movies as part of sex education.

Maybe I’m going to far, but it’s just the way I think it should be.

  62. “For Monkey’s sake PEOPLE WAKE UP!!! Don’t U C the hidden agenda in the book? It is promoting love for ROCKS. I don’t care if it is oval shaped or square,Rock love is just wrong. 63. Darus: accepting homosexuality while avoiding incest is not a double standard, it’s genetically sensible. Inbreeding leads to all manner of physical complications (and concomitant psychological ones as well). A gay couple can’t even affect the gene pool, so that analogy is fallacious.

I would argue the “choose to be gay” point, but such attempts tend to be fruitless with individuals like yourself.

  64. [...] news articles and blog posts cover more of this story.  (And yes please, I know that the couple split [...]

  65. Poor penguins, can’t we leave them in peace to be themselves?

  66. Darus, you convinced me to go out and order this book for my six year old. Right now. When it arrives in the mail I’m going to read it with her every day, right after we watch our daily dose of porn and read the playboy.

Thank you for your great suggestions.

  67. Hit the wrong button. how do we know what goes on in the mind of a child? and if there are infact ‘gay’ animals in nature. (a term us humans use) wouldnt that be part of science? shouldnt our children learn that? It is OUR JOBS as parents to teach them tolerance, to teach them about homosexuality, to teach them about personal issues. It is not our school systems job to pick up and begin teaching them what is OUR jobs. So what there are a set of male penguins at the zoo caring for a young one. The base of the matter is this. Where does teaching a child science come in, and thats science folks, if there are ‘gay’ (a term we made up” animals in the world they should learn about it) and where does the parenting come in. why ban a book? Too busy to explain to your child about tolerance? Ya im a father of two. I told them this, and they laughed! an argument of two male penguins caring for a young one… maybe those fathers who dont take care of there children should pick up that book and learn something…..

  68. oh, and Darus dear… no one’s forcing you to read the book. Yours is just another kneejerk reaction to something someone told you is wrong. Two male penguins wanting to be parents! Oh the horror! If only human fathers were as attentive to their kids. I’d rather have the little ones reading about so-called gay penguins than have them listen to your hue and cry. You’ve obviously have your mind made up. Don’t force YOUR agenda down MY throat, mmkay? Then maybe I won’t have to call you a hater and a homophobe in front of all these nice people.

  69. Determined and hopeful?dedicated and enthusiastic fathers? How do we know that they were any of these adjectives. Someone with an agenda peppered the story with words designed to give the reader a subconcious positive feeling toward an unnatural occurance ie male penguins creating a “family” in an unnatural environment. If anything the story show how unnatural “gay” parenting is. The “watchful zookeeper” is none other than our illustrious big brother, the state, there to make all things equal..that being a “funny and adorable daughter” raised in happy environment…Total crap.

  71. i love how theres a fight ensuing here! you go girls!

  72. Just because the homosexual deviant behavior is also practiced by animals, doesn’t mean that it should be taught to our children. Do you know what the typical life-span is for a homosexual, compared to a heterosexual? Check out http://www.indegayforum.org/news/show/26857.html
The lifespan of a homosexual is about 30 years less than a heterosexual. Why is this….? Think about it. It is a deviant behavior, just like drug abuse.

  73. Dear Stef, I have strong views on certain things and I believe there is a way to everything. A man is to be paired with a woman. That’s how things are. Homosexuality is like jamming a round peg into a square hole. The repercussions of condoning such acts will be ruinous in the long term.

I mean think of it, if a man is to be paired with a man, what’s the point? The primary function of sex is to breed not fun.

And for a more theological point of view, Islam (my religion), Christianity and (possibly -but I’m not entirely sure) Judaism carry the tale of Sodom, a city was destroyed because of it’s gay-loving inhabitants.

  74. Daus - You have the “tale” (your word - not mine) of Sodom a little screwed up (I’m sure there’s a pun here). Read the story, Adam and Steve weren’t living in a nice 3 bed/2 bath house, raising their children on a tree-lined street on Main Street USA. The entire population of the city surrounded a house and demanded to rape some male guests to the city.

Genesis19:4-5: When they had not yet retired, and the people of the city, the people of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, the entire populace from every end [of the city]. And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, and let us know them.”

Lot refused to give the visiting angels to the inhabitants of Sodom. He offered them his two daughters instead, but the people refused.

Darus - the Bible makes no mention that Lot’s offer might be a little immoral. I suppose since you use this story as a moral guide to today that you would likewise have no problem with this “compromise.”

In any event, the men were struck with blindness, allowing Lot and his family, who were then instructed to leave the city, to escape. As they made their escape the angels commanded that Lot and his family not look back under any circumstance. However as Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed with fire and brimstone by God, Lot’s wife was unable to keep her concentration and turned back to look at the city, and she was instantly transformed into a pillar of salt.

Once again, this particular story shows the true “just” nature of God . . .

Really Darus . . . do you live your life by this or just demand that others do so. Silly - just silly.

  75. hi im 12 i like being gay i have a penis length record witch i use every day i chat with other gay men and it is fun
